● Knowledge. Barty was sorted into Ravenclaw, for his obsession with learning and improving himself. He knew that in order to remain in his father's good graces and be recognized he had to achieve good marks and aim higher than the other students. Barty earned 12 O.W.L.s in his fifth year, and did equally as well on his N.E.W.Ts. After school, he used his craving for information to learn the Dark Arts. Trained by the LeStranges, he picked up on their methods quickly. He knows how to impersonate others by simply studying them. He's learned more from books and observation than any other method and he continues to strive to be better, even if he is no longer seeking the approval of others.

● The LeStrange family. At seventeen, Barty was young, impressionable and living with no direction aside from his father's pushed guidance, Barty looked for someone to lead him in the right direction. At a ministry held function, Barty met Rodolphus and Bellatrix LeStrange. Their dark personalities and humour amused him and within weeks, he was in correspondence with them both. They opened the door to Riddle for him and with training from the couple and their brother, Rabastan, he proved himself capable of being a Death Eater. He took the mark a month before his eighteenth birthday. He's remained close with them. He lost his virginity to Bellatrix during a heated session while he was training to be a Death Eater. A secret he's kept from Rodolphus, though he continues to treat both LeStrange men with respect and loyalty. He is still constantly seen in their company, particularly Bellatrix's, and has remained loyal to Lord Voldemort along with them.

Hate For

● Bartemius Crouch, Sr. Neglected and emotionally abused by his father, Barty developed a hatred for the man during his years at Hogwarts. He began to realize that he was nothing but a pawn for his father's political movements. Senior bragged constantly of his perfect family and boasted of his son's accomplishments, but hardly ever paid attention to what every boy needs in his life, parental assurance. Likewise, his father's treatment of his mother, the same neglect, led the boy to be further annoyed by the behaviour of his elder. In the spring of 1983 when Barty was only nineteen, with the help of Rodolphus and Bellatrix, he took his father's life and manipulated the corpse to give the appearance of natural causes. Because of this ability and the quality of his work, he was never convicted or charged. After the Ashwinder Coaliton exposed the truth of Senior's death, David Goyle was accused and murdered for the crime instead.

● Mad-Eye Moody. Barty, jr. spent a great deal of his summers at the Ministry with his father, in an attempt of quality time. While there, he got to know several members of the staff, his father's favourite being Alastor Moody, top auror of the department. Before coming to the realization that he was a tool of his father, Barty had looked up to the man, hoping to be more like him someday. He went constantly to Moody for advice, even after he had left Hogwarts and taken up a position in the MLE. After Barty took the mark, most of the sentiment that he held for the auror vanished. Knowing him to be a part of the Order, they ended up on opposite sides of the war. He considers Mad-Eye to be a joke now, with his paranoia and increasing old age. Yet, a part of him still holds respect and he's been unable to kill him.

Learn a Secret

● There is hope for Barty. He isn't inherently evil, at least not yet at twenty-one years old. If someone can get through to him, through all of his anger and resentment, they may be able to get him to change sides. He has clung to the Death Eaters because they accepted him. Through his facade of working for his father rather than against him, Barty was capable of doing great things for the Ministry and the MLE department. He was dedicated to his work and was on the path to becoming an auror. He is young, immature and has never known what it is like to have someone besides his mother truly care for him. The Death Eaters filled a void. He doesn't necessarily believe in the cause, but he will fight for the attention and the rewards.

Personal History

Bartemius Crouch, Jr was born to be the perfect pureblood heir to the Crouch inheritance. Like many other high society purebloods, he had an overworked absent father and a doting housewife mother who was his only source of love and affection growing up. Through out his childhood, young Barty tried to get his father's attention by any means necessary. The space between father and son grew even larger after Junior was sent off to Hogwarts and sorted into the house of Ravenclaw. With his son away at school, Barty Senior had to make even less of an effort to include his family into his life and became almost a nonexistant presence in his son's life.

Half way through school, after an accident involving a rather nasty and dangerous spilled potion on another student in a heated exchange of words, Barty Crouch Jr realized the way to gain his father's attention was to act out. When he was threatened to be expelled for his behavior in the potions classroom, his father came running to his aid and-- albeit to save political face and to keep the news from getting out that his son was a trouble maker, talked the headmaster out of the severe punishment. From then on it was just a matter for Barty Junior to find the thin line between too much trouble and just enough trouble to get the scolding letters, howlers, and advice from the man who until then seemed to forget he even had a son and wife at home. After all, negative attention was still attention and it was better than nothing.

After completing his schooling, Barty's feelings towards his father were no longer the adolescent needs for attention, but emotions bordering hatred for the neglect he suffered most of his life. No longer caring whether or not he was second to the Ministry in his father's eyes, Barty began searching for a way to prove he was not like his father and could be stronger and better. An associate of his father's who worked at the Ministry, a marked Death Eater, passed along his name to the Dark Lord and with little convincing needed, Barty presented himself and took the mark. He was only eighteen. It didn't take much time for Barty to fall into a routine with the other Death Eaters, even making a close aquaintenceship out of the LeStranges whom he spent most of his time around even outside of the circle. The Lestranges became a second family to Barty, taking him under their wing and training him further in the Dark Arts.

Barty killed his father at the beginning of March, 1983, when he was nineteen years old. He murdered him in the house while his mother was out shopping. The LeStranges helped him cover up the scene and then the following day at work, Barty planted evidence on David Goyle, who was eventually called out as guilty for the crime. Afterwards, Barty's mother fell terminally ill. He spent a year cooped up with her, caring for her and when she finally passed, he abandoned the estate and moved to Australia to live near Rabastan and Bellatrix. After Riddle fell from power, Barty abandoned his job at the Ministry and went on the run with the rest of the Death Eaters who had managed to slip through the MLE's fingers. He began corresponding through hidden letters with Tom Riddle, in a desperate attempt to free him. By the beginning of 1985, Barty held a place amongst the original loyal Death Eaters in charge of finding a way to save their Lord. He is still unrelenting in his mission and redeveloped beliefs.
